Report: HP and Dr. Dre to Join Forces

Dr. Dre and Monster this summer announced a new line of headphones called Beats by Dr. Dre. Designed with the best quality of sound in mind, the headphones retail for $350. According to CNet (which cites people familiar with the matter), the artist has collaborated with HP and Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine on a line of premium-priced laptops, headphones and software that are designed to educate the masses on what music should sound like when you hook up a set of decent headphones.

CNet goes on to say Iovine would not discuss HP or any other company that may be involved during an interview last week but he did confirm that he and Dr. Dre are part of a plan to reconstruct the entire "digital music ecosystem."

"I just want our product to sound better," Iovine told CNet. "The record business committed many, many mistakes in the last 10 years, and I'm right in there. One of them was letting its product get degraded," he said. "It's one thing to let it get stolen, it's another to allow it to be degraded because then you really don't have a chance...video games and TV quality are getting better and the quality of our work is getting lower. If that happens, then music will become disposable. That's something we can fix."

  • As somebody in that field, it's all a bunch of meaningless elitism, and I doubt they have some brilliant and original product to blow away the established products. Nothing makes you look cooler than complaining about how it isn't as good as it was back in the day. Although the major record labels now are all pretty much shite-factories churning out stuff that sounds like everything else they release, but most of it does sound pretty good from a sound quality perspective... Dre is a pop-princess now anyways, much like Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, not cool, underground and original like he was in the 90s...

Actually, the Beats headphones are very good for that price range. Of course he is getting paid but if he is also helping to raise the audio quality of the industry then I am all for it.

We have become so jaded as a society that it is hard to imagine someone doing something altruisticly.

I'd be a lot more impressed if HP had announced it was teaming up with engineers at Bowers & Wilkins.

So this article is about $350 headphones, and an un-substantiated rumor that Dr. Dre MIGHT have worked with HP on a laptop. Good to know I guess.

Dr. Dre makes millions upon MILLIONS of dollars from his musical prowess and you think HE'S the one whoring his name??? LOL - If I didn't know any better I would think Dr. Dre could buy Interscope Records and HP and still have money left over to buy a pair of those headphones and a laptop.
