When Cougar announced its 700K back in September, we were puzzled by some of its design choices, as it was clearly aimed entirely towards gamers, leaving typists in the cold. Now, however, the company revealed its 600K mechanical gaming keyboard, which takes a much different approach.
On the surface, the keyboard looks quite the same, and it follows the same design principles, with the appearance styled after "stealth warship technology." Beyond that, it's also built in a similar way, with Cherry MX switches; however, it lacks almost all the features that the 700K has, and that's not entirely a bad thing.
In some cases, simplicity can make a product superior. We're not suggesting that the less-featured product is superior to the one that comes with all the beans, but for typists, or people who don't want to be distracted by the elaborate additional features of some gaming keyboards, the 600K appears to be a better choice. Some of us don't need all those macro-keys, different keycaps and unusual layouts.
"We knew that there were people who simply weren't interested in the plethora of functions offered by high end keyboards but at the same time didn't want to settle for a lower end one. For all those people, who just want a pure, high quality mechanical keyboard in a durable and elegant design, we created the Cougar 600K," said Lio Huang, Cougar's Marketing Department Director.
As far as features go, the keyboard has a gold-plated USB connector, N-Key rollover, multimedia keys, and LED lighting for the WASD keys. It also has a USB pass-through port, two wrist rests and works entirely without the need for drivers. (Finally, a keyboard that doesn't need drivers…)
Cougar did not give any word on pricing or availability.
