With even the lowest-priced system using a quad-core processor, 3D Studio Max results are defined by clock speed and efficiency. Both favor the overclocked Yorkfield core of the high-end system, with a total advantage of 145% over the slowest configuration.
Not that we'd ignore the mid-priced system, as its 79% advantage over the slowest configuration in Cinema4D is close enough to the high-end machine's 126% lead that it begins to look like a good performance value.
The overclocked mid-priced and high-end configurations outpace the basic low-end speed by 94% and 169% in Photoshop CS3.
Abnormal results in AVG would appear to point to a difference in software configuration, even though every tester was using the same files. Thus, we won't be using it in the final "score".
It appears that WinRAR gains nearly as much from the high-end machine's RAID array as it does from the added processor speed.
