Oculus Eyes Q1 2016 Release Date For Rift, Pre-Orders Later This Year

For the past few years, Oculus has paved the road for virtual reality. In its wake, various companies created their own version of a VR headset, peripherals, and even content for VR. Through it all, Oculus has stayed on top of the competition, but there was no word on when the final version would be available to everyone. Until now.

Oculus just announced that the Rift will be available in the first quarter of 2016, with pre-orders coming "later this year."

Oculus also released two new photos of the final design. It's not a big departure from the Crescent Bay prototype, but it's enough to distinguish it from past iterations. The front plate has a solid black finish with the sensors no longer visible. Other than that, the only noticeable change is the curvier edges to round out the front plate.

Oculus said the final version also improves a few other features such as tracking (for both standing and seated experiences) and ergonomics. But a few things still remain; for example, the attached headphones are still there, as is the slider at the bottom of the Rift used to adjust the lenses.

With the pre-order window approaching soon, Oculus is set to release more details about the final version of Rift in the coming weeks and months. Details include hardware specs, software, and more content coming to the Rift. The company also teased its next appearance at E3 next month, and you can bet we'll be there to see what it has in store for us for the next few months.

The company has come a long way since its original Kickstarter campaign. It found a new owner in the form of Facebook and stepped into the mobile VR space by partnering with Samsung to create the Gear VR. Oculus has been the attraction of many trade shows over the past few years, but with a release window finally determined, the clock is set for the rest of the public to get their hands on the future that is virtual reality.

If this came out earlier this year or last year I would have been way more excited. Now that the HTC Vive (SteamVR) is coming out this year also, I will probably get the Vive. It's not because the Vive has better reviews, but because Oculus missed their chance to dominate the market.

I have wasted too much dough on hype. Screw the Pre-Orders.

I'll wait till some real-VR games actually come out before investing in one of these. Which probably won't be till sometime near 2018. I'm not that interested in playing regular games with added motion sickness.

Ripping off those $5 headphones would be the first thing i'd do. That's just a bad idea when most gamers have a set of really nice headphones already.

Ocolus has failed big time. They are so late and past all of their projections to release any kind of consumer level product. 1st Qtr 2016, really?? EPIC FAIL!

  • I agree with everyone here. They HAD the market. They invented it. Then, delays, delays, delays. Now a lot of competition is comming. Some will launch before this.

I will wait at least 4 years before I get one of these. The technology will be mature, the market well-defined, and the duds will no longer be in business. I predict the Occulus will be one of these duds, unable to acheive a good market share.

Why would you preorder this? Will there be limited quantity like the developer kit versions? Will they remove the silly headphones as a bonus?

Oculus will fail because they have done everything possible to ensure their demise: 1) Very late product to market, 2) ignorance to customer's needs, 3) minimal collaboration with 3rd party game deveopers/companies, 4) clunky last generation hardware...

You get the idea. Facebook purchasing Oculus was supposed to fix all of these issues because of the bottomless money pit that was offered. Instead, Oculus veered off the yellow brick road from the very beginning and now will never find Oz.

1)I dont think they are holding anything back. It comes out when the tech is up to par
    2)how?
3)what about Eve Valkyrie and two generations of developer kits?
4)have you tried the consumer version? How is it heavier than the HTC? have you tried them?

no...I dont get what your saying.
