Windows 8 Install Process Streamlined to 11 Clicks

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.

Upgrading your computer's operating system can be kind of a pain in the butt, but Microsoft wants to make sure that aspect of things doesn't play even the smallest role in deterring you from installing Windows 8 when it finally arrives. The company has apparently streamlined the install process  down to just 11 clicks. Speaking via the Building Windows 8 blog, Christa St. Pierre said that, whereas the old upgrade process for Windows 7 included four different wizards and up to 60 different screens, Windows 8 will allow the same task to be accomplished with as few as 11 clicks.

"The exact number of steps you need to take to complete the installation varies based on your existing OS, migration choices, install method, and number of blocking issues you need to resolve to get the PC ready for installation, but the experience is greatly simplified for everyone," St. Pierre said. "We accomplished all of this with no loss of functionality or customization—we simply streamlined the existing experience."

The blog post details a number of changes that Microsoft has made to the Windows 8 setup process, including the fact that the company is now putting more focus on the web as a method of software delivery. The company said that while it will continue to sell software in a physical format, it will be making it easy for users to upgrade their machines via the web, too.

"This includes starting the setup experience online as well, and having one continuous integrated experience from beginning to end," Christa said. "There is also one big advantage that is a favorite of mine. With our web setup experience, we actually "pre-key" the setup image that is downloaded to a unique user, which means that you don’t have to type in the 25-digit product key when you install!"

It makes sense and could actually be really helpful for the average user. However, hardcore users will always need their physical media for the occasionnal format/reinstall. I was once like that, but now I can really see myself upgrading my current install through the web.

win98 didn't fail, it was great upgrade from win95 and it was awesome for games for its time.

now Windows Me..... and Vista those were the biggest failures in M$ history.
Still I will probably skip Windows 8.

I have to agree, this much hype over a product is usually not good. I think 8 is another Vista in the making. I for don't care for the tile idea one bit. I like 7 alot, and with a bit of refinement I could see it outlasting XP. I really don't get what the devs at MS are thinking sometimes.... Maybe if we make our OS look like windows phone we can sell more phones, and in the mean time we will still make money off 7....is my guess and the only logic I can see behind this crap UI.

Folks, it is really simple. 90,000 Employees... 90,000 paychecks. Plus stockholders who want money, plus Executive who want M-O-N-E-Y... you got to have something to SELL.
So you hype away on a new MUST HAVE OS and you cash in.
How much OS do you need ?
I run a small IT company, and I use Windows 2000 !
Have one XT box around to test site projects on higher than IE6 (all other browsers can be updated to current status under W2K).

Can I play 'Crisis' on my Box ? :-)
Prob. not. Don't even know exactly what it is; don't care.
Like most professional users, we stay WELL behind new technologies until they sort themselves out. And why would I upgrade a couple of hundred PCs if they work just fine the way things are.

I don't think the market is ready for a complete UI overhaul WITHOUT Classic mode to revert too. I just think Microsoft has either gotten too old, or Ballmer doesn't have his touch on reality. Either way, this is going to fail badly if there is no classic mode. I am already planning on staying with 7 for the long haul on non touch devices. The sad parts is I was one of the few people who actually liked Vista and was even happier when 7 came out. I do like alot of the architectural changes under the hood for Windows 8, it is just that damn UI change. it is awful.LONG live windows 7!



Just to let you know if you haven't heard already...You will be able to revert back to old "traditional" Windows theme. The UI is an added feature.

Yep. It took me about 30 seconds to do in the Win 8 beta. It looks almost identical to Win 7 afterwards.

You know what would make Windows 8 fantastic to install? If you actually had the option of customizing your own install, like you can with Se7en Lite. Don't want Metro UI? no problem just uncheck it in the custom setup. Don't want Internet Explorer or Media Player? No problem just uncheck it in the custom setup. Man that would be soo nice if Microsoft actually allowed the User to have a custom install to suit there needs.

What do you mean without a class mode to revert to? They've long made it clear, that the touch interface can be switched over to a classic Windows view like you'd get in Windows 7, for those not running it on a tablet. They've also done a good job showing a number of enhancements that they had been lagging behind on. Sure this product could ultimately be a flop, but nothing else it simply looks like this will be Vista 3.0(As I've largely seen W7 as Vista 2.0)

I like both. Apple can be a little complicated at times, but if you take the time to learn it, its just as easy. I use a Macbook Pro and love it! The one thing I wish Microsoft would do that Apple does is make their OS size smaler. I believe OS X Lion is only like 4-6GB big, which makes it super fast to boot and ready to go.


But as for Win. 8, I wouldn't think it would be a flop at all. They've nailed Win. 7 pretty darn good, why should they screw up Win. 8? Vista was a new type of OS that was built from scratch I believe, so they of course were going to be experience problems with it. That's why Win. 7 was made. I think Win. 8 would just be as good as Win. 7 if not better. For one thing, there are articles already that shows that system performance does better with Win. 8 than Win. 7. All in all, I think it would be a fine upgrade. :)

I always kept my C: drive small and simply reinstalled.

I see they're taking marketing cues from Intel, by creating a lot of hype comparing a worst-case scenario of a previous product to a best-case scenario of a new product.

I'm pretty sure that the "up to 60 screens" is grossly inflated, and probably includes screens that are in the Visual Studio project, but not in the actual wizard . In fact, I'd be willing to wager that the current process's best case scenario is close to 11 clicks, maybe 15 tops, and that's why they didn't come out and say it. That's like saying:

"Our new Ferrari has a top speed of 180mph, the old one only has 600hp."

What they don't say is that the new one has 605hp, and the old one has a top speed of 178mph.

No, Bob was the biggest failure in MS history. MS has a server that is accessible by anyone in the company that has every piece of software Microsoft has ever created...except Bob...

That should give you an idea of how bad it failed.

Win pre3.1, useless or fail
Win3.1 Amazing for it's day (first useful visual OS for PC)
Win95 Fail (Great concept, but a resource hog, and not well thought out)
Win98 Win (Made win95 useful and 'stable')
Win98SE amazing for it's day! (Very stable, and less resource hungry than WinME)
WinME Fail (OK, many liked it, but Win98SE and Win2K were way better!)
Win2K Win (First 'Professional' grade OS to the mass market. Very stable... unless running a Creative Sound Card lol)
WinXP Win (While considered 'bloatware' for the first 2 years, this was the uncontested 'Best OS' for years!)
Vista Fail (again, like Win95, neat idea, great to see something 'different', but it just didnt work right at first)
Win7 Win (like win98, it takes all the neat ideas from Vista, and makes them work right)
Win8 ??

Branching off from the previous interface has always been a rough transition, (as seen from win95 and Vista) but as this is largely a hybrid of Win7 and Phone7 it is not really trying anything 'new', just 'new to the desktop'. From what I have seen of 8 so far (Have used it on my netbook sense the release) it has been a simple and good experience for being in 'pre beta'. Sure it does not feel like a finished product yet, but it feels much further along in the process than other versions of Windows at this stage (even Win7 Milestone 1 was more buggy than this). I'm not saying it will be a big win or fail, but we cannot use some simplistic and nearsighted vision of previous releases to make a judgement.
