Acer Auctioning Limited Edition Star Trek-Themed Aspire R7

There's nothing I want more than a hybrid tablet/notebook that I can fly around my office (dungeon) like the Starship Enterprise. Thankfully, Acer feels my need for adolescent weirdness (and apparently has seen my desk topped with Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Agent Fox Mulder, Sonic and more toys) and is releasing a Limited Edition version of the Aspire R7 notebook. It's similar to the one Acer teased in the Star Trek Into Darkness promotional trailer months ago, only the company has taken the design one step further by decking it out to make Trek fans all giddy.

According to Acer, only 25 units of this Limited Edition Trek-themed hybrid were created, none of which have been released on the market. The company indicates that they will never see the light of day at Best Buy or Walmart, but rather will be slowly syphoned off in special promotions. This first unit will be auctioned on eBay starting June 14 and ending June 24. All proceeds will be donated to two charitable organizations: The Mission Continues and Save the Children.

The Acer Aspire R7 Star Trek Into Darkness Limited Edition Package includes the hybrid notebook decorated with a stainless steel Star Trek logo, a sand-blast finish and a polished surface. There's also an R7 protective sleeve with Star Trek logo.

The bundle will also include a Star Trek Into Darkness film poster signed by the film cast, special Star Trek Into Darkness content such as wallpapers and videos, Star Trek Soundtrack, a download of Star Trek: The Video Game, and unique Star Trek Into Darkness product packaging with a Limited Edition Certificate of Authenticity from Acer and Paramount Pictures.

Please, fellow Trekkies, remember to breathe.

This awesome hybrid notebook features the company's "Ezel" hinge which allows the device to easily convert into an AIO-type form factor, a tablet, a notebook and a display to share media with others. The specs for the R7-571-6858 include an Intel Core i5-3337U CPU (1.8 GHz/2.7 GHz w/ Turbo Boost), 6 GB of DDR3 memory, a 24 GB SSD and a 500 GB HDD, a 15.6 inch Full HD widescreen CineCrystal LED-backlit multi-touch display (1920 x 1080), 10-point multi-touch control, Windows 8 64-bit and more. It typically retails for $999.99.

How much this special Star Trek model will sell for remains to be seen, but we're sure it will be a pretty penny.

"Acer is giving one lucky person in the world the opportunity to become the sole owner of the Acer Aspire R7 Star Trek Into Darkness Limited Edition Package," said Hugues Gontier, senior director of marketing, Acer America. "We know this extremely rare Limited Edition will be a treasured prize for the winner, and it will also help two worthy charities further their missions of empowering military veterans and helping children in need."

Along with the Trek-themed notebook, Acer plans to auction two additional Star Trek Into Darkness film posters signed by the cast, offering fans other unique collectibles and increasing the charitable proceeds. More information about these auction items may be found on eBay here.

Gene Roddenberry's vision comes closer to reality with every passing year. So many of the gadgets he thought of back in the 60's with the original series are reality today. It won't happen in my life time but humans will travel faster than light some day.
    Amen!
