For this test, our standard procedure is to use the high speed RW media supplied by the manufacturer. Burning is done using Nero Burning ROM 184.108.40.206. The size of the file is exactly 660152 kBytes (645 MB). Writing method is TAO.
As LG Electronics didn't supply any media with the writer, we tried our luck first of all with the Ultra Speed media from Yamaha. As the screenshot shows, the GCE-8480B did not know what to make of it.
As there are no 16x rewritable media on the market, we had no choice but to go back to our standard 12x RW disk.

The result is neither spectacular nor surprising. The GCE-8480B and GCE-8400B both burn the same media at the same speed. Our attempt to use a faster speed than 12x failed due to the drive's "Fail-Free-Writing" feature. This checks the media before each write operation and sets the optimum writing speed. The class-leader in this discipline, thanks to a bundled, compatible disk, is the CRW-F1UX from Yamaha.
