AVIVO HD vs. Purevideo HD Part 3: Midrange and Low-end Card Performance
Jaggies Test: Out Of 20 Points
This test simply shows a few rotating lines in a circle. As the angle changes, interlacing makes the lines appear to become stepped. Successful de-interlacing will remove these artifacts.
Jaggies Reduction test | Windows XP | Windows Vista |
---|---|---|
Radeon 2600 XT | 20 | 20 |
Geforce 8600 GTS | 0 | 20 |
Radeon 2400 PRO | 0 | 0 |
Geforce 8400 GS | 0 | 0 |
The Radeon 2600 XT gets full points here, and the 8600 GTS does well - but only in Windows Vista. The other cards are completely unsuccessful.
Film Resolution Loss Test: Out Of 25 Points
This test simply shows a pattern of lines and color bars. If the DVD player can show the smallest lines without flickering, it is successfully de-interlacing the image.
Film Resolution Loss test 1 | Windows XP | Windows Vista |
---|---|---|
Radeon 2600 XT | 25 | 25 |
Geforce 8600 GTS | 0 | 25 |
Radeon 2400 PRO | 0 | 0 |
Geforce 8400 GS | 0 | 0 |
Can you see a pattern here yet? Flawless 2600 XT performance across the OS options, the 8600 GTS works in Vista, and nothing else works at all.
I'd like to note that I did see a tiny bit of flickering with both the 2600 XT and 8600 GTS in some of the lines on the interior of the test pattern, although the HQV benchmark's scoring guidelines state that I should only concentrate on the corner boxes. Since these did not flicker, I gave perfect scores to the 2600 XT and the 8600 GTS in Vista.
