Buyer's Guide: 11 Color Inkjet Printers

Canon Pixma IP4300

The Canon Pixma iP4300 offers the same photo and paper handling capabilities as the iP1800, but includes a five-color ink system (instead of the four-color CMYb that the iP1800 supports). It also provides a page flipping capability, so you can print double-sided without having to flip pages by hand.

It's not unreasonable to look at the iP4300 as a souped-up version of the iP1800.

Another nice iP4300 feature is its two paper trays, so that you can store both photo and plain paper right in the printer, ready to handle either type of print job on demand. This printer is also a little bit larger than the iP1800. Its dimensions are 17.5" x 6.3" x 12.0" (44.45cm x 16.00cm x 30.48cm), and it weighs considerably more at 14.3 pounds (6.49 kg). In best quality mode, it's noticeably quieter at 34 dB(A). But then, too, the iP4300 also costs about twice as much as the iP1800, with retail prices around $100.

The iP4300 includes 512 black nozzles in its print head, with up to 1,024 nozzles for individual colors (1,024 for cyan and magenta, and 512 for yellow and black). It offers 600x600 resolution for black output, and up to 9600x2400 for color. The iP4300 supports all modern Windows versions, plus Max OS X v.10.2.8 to 10.4.x.
