Grok, xAI's flagship chatbot, has become an officially sanctioned part of United States government operations. xAI and the United States inked a deal on Wednesday that guarantees the use of Grok across the federal government for $0.42 per agency, per the government's press release.

The newly reskinned "Grok for Government", based on the Grok 4 and Grok 4 Fast models, is available for all federal agencies effective immediately. The deal lasts for 18 months, terminating in March 2027, and is the longest AI contract yet signed by the government.

So... I'm guessing the motivation here is "let's help make the average govt employee more efficient"?

    Right...

The usual principle with Big Tech is that: "if you're not paying with your wallet, you're paying with your data." Sometimes, both.

So, I'd want to see the fine print of the contracts and ensure the proper safeguards are in place for not leaking sensitive data or allowing Grok to misuse it.

There's another possible angle, which is that Grok's plan is use this opportunity to gain experience working with government agencies, so that it can make more competitive offerings either to other governments or to the the US government after this round of contracts expires. I'd guess this is at least their public rationale for offering service so far below cost.

The United States government has finalized a deal licensing the Grok 4 chatbot for use by federal government workers. This follows recent deals made with OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic, but raises eyebrows due to the previously fractured relationship between xAI boss Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

Elon was always going back to Trump because his "America" party was only going help his political foes get back into power. Not surprising at all.

What continues to amaze me is somebody who is so erratic and self-destructive still inspires confidence in investors to give him billions for his next "CyberTruck Triumph".

Maybe because, PayPal (sold), SpaceX (makes 4.5B/yr), Tesla (Makes > 7B / yr), Tesla Energy (makes > 2.5B/yr).

But nah, lets just push some narrative that he is anything less than the most successful creator of new businesses and industries in the US in this generation.
