One more comment about the 12-channel results: The 3Ware 9500S-12 is the only one to offer 12 SATA ports per controller outright, but the feature known as spanning can be used with the Raidcore BC4852 to create an array that spans controllers. We used this feature in order to deploy the 12 drives (six drives per controller).
