Round-Up: Comparison Testing of 22 Hard Disk Drives

UltraATA Hard Drives

Hitachi DeskStar 180GXP

The DeskStar 180 GXP was an IBM product when first introduced. For its time, it was a fast, capable disk drive. You could obtain 30, 60, 80, 120 or 180 GB models, using one to three platters of up to 60 GB each. At that point, 7200 RPM drives were strong performance contenders. The cache configuration was 8 MB only for top of the line models; others had to make do with 2 MB.

The access times of about 13 ms remain acceptable even by today's standards, but the average data transfer rate of 44 MB/s can't keep up with the 50+ MB/s typical of today's current models.
