Digicams: New Little Megapixel Monsters, Part II

Canon PowerShot S230 (Ixus V3), Continued

For the settings, you can choose between automatic or manual mode. The manual mode gives you a range of ISO 50 to 400, burst mode, Spot light metering, shutter speed adjustment and custom white balance. The last option is all the more useful because the automatic white balance is often inadequate. With the custom option, the camera's rating for color rendering goes up from 2/5 to 3/5 and eventually beats the other four for color trueness.

There is little vignetting or distortion, though if the light conditions are poor or you are shooting in close-up, the difference in brightness can be up to 13% between the center and edges, which also suffer from a slight bulge, but the subject needs to be really straight for you to realize.

In the mini 3-megapixel category, this is the one we prefer. Canon is a reference value in photography.
