Portable Storage: Convenience is the Key

Software: Memeo Backup

We already found Memeo Backup bundled with the DriveStation Turbo USB, and it’s the same software in the case of the MiniStation Turbo USB. It allows you to back up certain file categories or directory structures, and it is possible to encrypt your backup set (using software encryption). However, you should be aware that it will be impossible to access data once you use the encryption option, if you should forget the password.

Buffalo also adds Secure Lock Ware, which can be used to encrypt individual files or to deny access to drives. You can choose to copy the encrypted file into the source folder, to the desktop or into another folder. This will also be the case when you decrypt files, and it requires the user to pay attention : the encryption or decryption source will never be modified, which means that you’ll have to erase the unencrypted file manually (and securely) if you want to make sure no one can access the file. Encryption also always includes compression.

  • After 6 hours of "copying" the contents of my C drive using the Safety feature - which indicated that it had copied 260+MB successfully, nothing was written to the drive. This is worse than useless because if I had not checked to see how much space was still available I would not have realized I had no backup to recover from. Seagate Technical support confirmed my observations. Drive was fine, software was useless.
