Since the first power supply test three years ago - Inadequate and Deceptive Product Labeling : Comparison of 21 Power Supplies - many things have changed. The power supplies have become more colorful and more complicated, equipped with many functions such as displays and standby outputs. Power supplies are still high-profit items, because they are relatively inexpensive to manufacture and sell for high prices. Previous tests have shown that the efficiency under partial load for power supplies fluctuates between 55 and 75 percent - depending on the model and on the power class.
The power range here extends from 300 watts up to an amazing 850 watts, and the corresponding price range is from about $95 to $500. Both voltage transformers that are actively cooled (using fans) and passively cooled (without fans) will be used.
Originally we planned to bring two more power supplies on board as re-test, but to date, manufacturers Cooler Master and Hiper have not sent their replacement samples. We offered them to test them offline - just in case the devices in question arrive.
