Our favorite car nuts over at Top Gear UK recently issued a challenge for Honda to build a 130 mph lawn mower. If you find yourself asking why anyone would ever need a lawn mower capable of doing 0-60 in four seconds, you've obviously never seen an episode of Top Gear. Still, for whatever reason, the lads decided they needed such a vehicle, and put in a call to Honda to see if the Japanese car maker could help make their dreams a reality.
What the Top Gear team didn't realize was that their dream was a lot scarier than they had anticipated. The monster that Honda's Team Dynamics came up with was built using a VTR 1000cc engine complete with a steering rack from a Morris Minor, wheels and tires from a racing quad, a fiber glass cutting deck, and the back axle of a 250cc go-kart. Two lengths of brake cable were attached to two motors spinning at 4000 RPM and act as the blades for cutting the grass. We mustn't forget that this beast, capable of a top speed of 130 mph and with a power-to-weight ratio of 520 bhp per tonne, is actually supposed to be used to cut grass.
Top Gear has a video of the mower actually running on its website, but there's been no grass cutting that we know of just yet. What we do know is that this thing is loud, and we'd love to roll one across our lawn on Sunday morning, just to see the neighbors' faces. Head on over to Top Gear for the video.
