Tom's reader "popsracer" informed us that Unisys Corporation revealed new enterprise server models last week that utilize the latest Intel Xeon processors. The new additions will appear in its family of ES3000 rack/tower servers, its ES5000 blade servers, and its ES7000 scalable servers. According to the company, clients will now have a choice of scale-out and scale-up approaches to solutions.
In the ES7000 family, the new scalable 7600 G2 Enterprise Server--featuring the 8-core Intel Xeon 7500 series--will support up to 64 cores and 128 threads in 8 sockets. Unisys said that this model would be ideal for consolidation and virtualization of multiple systems into a smaller number. The server won't come cheap however, starting at $30,000 when it becomes available in May 2010.
As for the ES5000 series, Unisys has added the 5400B G2 model supporting the 6-core Intel Xeon 5600 series and up to two sockets. End-users can configure up to 14 of these "blade" servers to be used in the new ES5000 Model 5230R Blade Enclosure. Pricing starts at $3,100, and will be available in June 2010.
In the ES3000 rack/tower department, Unisys added the 3590R G1 model sporting the 8-core Intel Xeon 7500 series. This setup supports up to four sockets in a rack configuration, and would be ideal for virtualization, consolidation, and database-intensive business applications. Unisys also added that it enhanced previous models--the 3530R, 3560R and 3560T--to support the 6-core Intel Xeon 5600. Pricing will start at a meager $1,700, and will be available in June 2010.
