Fujitsu develops low-power H.264 compression circuits

Fujitsu announced that it has completed development of core circuitry for H.264 video encoding and decoding. According to the company the, device can run H.264 encoded content in high-definition quality with a power consumption of less than 100 milliwatts. The circuitry aims to be included in harddrives as well as in battery operated consumer electronics devices such as digital still and video cameras and portable multimedia players.

According to Fujitsu, H.264 encoding and decoding requires about 10 times the processing performance of MPEG2 devices.
