B&N Cuts the Price of the Nook HD in the United Kingdom
B&N has priced the Nook HD to sell.
Hot on the heels of news that Amazon is launching a brand new Kindle Paperwhite, Barnes & Noble has cut the price of its Nook HD tablet reader in the United Kingdom.
TechRadar reports that Barnes & Noble has cut the price of the 7-inch to just £79 for the 8GB model and £99 for the 16GB version. If this news is ringing a few bells for you, that's because B&N just cut the price of the Nook HD (as well as the Simple Touch and HD+) quite recently. The Nook HD dropped £109 and £159 to £69 and £129 in July, though the discounts were labeled as 'limited time offers.' If the Nook HD isn't your bag, you might be tempted by the 9-inch Nook HD+. The 16GB model is now selling for £129 and the 32GB is priced at £149.
These prices are listed as 'while stocks last' so it looks like B&N is keen to sell of surplus stock. Earlier this year, B&N announced that it would stop making its own ereaders. Instead, the company's tablet line will be co-branded with yet-to-be-announced third party manufacturers of consumer electronics products. The news followed a 34 percent drop in sales of the Nook eReader and tablet lines for the fiscal quarter ended in April.
"We are taking big steps to reduce the losses in the Nook segment, as we move to a partner-centric model in tablets and reduce overhead costs," William Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble, said at the time. "We plan to continue to innovate in the single purpose black-and-white eReader category, and the underpinning of our strategy remains the same today as it has since we first entered the digital market, which is to offer customers any digital book, magazine or newspaper, on any device."
Get 'em while you can, folks, because the next Nook-branded device we see could be quite different.

GreaseMonkey_62 It's not terribly surprising. The Nook hardware has always been nice, but B&N hasn't had the content to back it up like Amazon or Google. Given how much Microsoft has invested in this already, I'm predicting they will be involved somehow as the third part.Reply
