MSI Unveils 16-inch Gaming Laptop

Monday MSI revealed its new 16-inch gaming notebook, the GE600, which uses Intel's HM55 chipset and 32nm Core i5 processor, and AMD's ATI Radeon HD5730 discrete graphics (with 1 GB DDR3 VRAM).

The portable rig sports a 720p HD webcam, a built-in sub-woofer (really?), and SRS Premium Sound. The GE600 is also decked out with a shiny coat of black, highlighted by a gold palm rest.

As for other specs, the gaming notebook offers a Windows 7 Home Premium, two DDR3 RAM SO-DIMM slots, a 16-inch HD TFT LCD screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution), and SATA HDD space ranging from 250, 320, to 500 GB. There's also a 4-in-1 card reader (XD/SD/MMC/Memory Stick), Bluetooth, Intel's 802.11 a/b/g/draft n, HDMI out, and more.

MSI said that it is also throwing in two "theater-class" speakers and its exclusive ECO Engine Power Saving Technology. The laptop will come with a six-cell battery, however gamers can update to the nine-cell version.

"To satisfy customer needs, MSI 16" entertainment model - GE600 - was developed to introduce the most advanced software/hardware devices characterized by all-new exterior design, HD webcam, sub-woofer and leading SRS Premium Sound audio, all of which enables customers to enter a new era of mobile video/audio enjoyment experiences," said Sam Chern, MSI Notebook Marketing Director.

Outside the specs and all the promotion, MSI didn't offer any pricing or an exact release date on this laptop.

What are the specs on ATi's 5730? And is it a cutback version of the non-existent desktop counterpart?

    Pipelines--------------------400
    Core Speed-----------------650 MHz
    Memory Speed-------------800 MHz
    Memory Bus Width--------128 Bit
    Memory Type---------------DDR3, GDDR3
    Current Consumption-----26 Watt
    technology------------------40 nm
    DirectX 11, Shader 5.0

The 5xxx mobility series seems to actually be just juiced up 4xxx mobilities (the 4870 and 4870m were both 800 core, but the 5870 is 1600 and the 5870m is 800).

The 5730m is approximately equal to a GTS 250m, or a desktop GT 220 or 4650, and I'd compare it to a desktop 5570.

If I get a mobile chip, it'll be a 5870, thank you very much.

  • 1920 x 1080 on a 16 inch screen. What a terrible idea! Other than that, it looks like a decent gaming rig

Wouldn't it make more sense to spare on CPU and invest into a better graphic card instead???

My old Dell Inspiron 9400 has a subwoofer and it's pretty damn nice. The quality of the sound um sounds? much better when you have proper bass.

The res is too high at that size I have a MSI with 9800M and 1680x1050 1920x1080 is too agressive at with .4" larger screen. At my res with the crappy (buggy) GPU it games fine.

    Atleast 5870 crossfire for me, I don't mind a 20 minute battery :)
