Samsung to unveil low power display panel without color filter

Samsung said it will unveil a new 32 inch LCD at a display conference in Yokohama, Japan, next week. Unlike other conventional color LCD displays, the new display will not use a color filter to separate out the red, green and blues, but will rely on the backlight to separately transmit colors.

The display will have a 1366 X 768 resolution and a contrast ratio of 1000 to 1. Samsung claims that the new panel uses only 82 watts which is 60% less than other panels. In addition a 5 millisecond response time is promised. Samsung says that mass production of the new displays will begin in mid 2006 and will scale up to larger panels.

There currently is no official model number for the display and no purchase price has been set.
