Sigh of Relief: Modern Warfare 2 PC Not Delayed

Next news
1:51 PM - October 19, 2009 by Marcus Yam

Phew, now we can put down our pitchforks and torches.

After 421 very long pages on the official Infinity Ward Modern Warfare 2 forum packed with anger and uncertainty regarding a rumored delay for the PC version of the upcoming shooter, the game developer finally broke silence and confirmed that all versions of Modern Warfare 2 will be hitting on November 11.

Ryan Bowling of Infinity Ward tweeted: "No delay on PC for Modern Warfare 2. You'll also have Prestige Mode in PC as well as lots of Steam support. Hopefully min specs will be soon"

Those 140 characters don't contain a lot of detail, but the word of no delay along with Steam support should bring a smile to the faces of many PC gamers.

To celebrate this good news, let's take a look at the latest trailer:

Assuming that the other news I heard is true (that they dropped the dedicated server option and modding support)

...this just means I can go out and not buy it on time instead of waiting to not buy it.

Hopefully that one turns out to be untrue as well though.

no dedicated servers..

"If you have never played on a PC, and your multiplayer experience has only been delivered to you via matchmaking, then you will never really understand. But try to imagine a host hosting a game while never turning his console off, and you can always reach that room and play there whenever you want, night or day, because its always on. Now imagine that host has a Pentagon grade internet connection and his X360 can handle 64 players in that room. On top of that, the guy whos the host is actually resurrected Ghandi, so you will all be treated with respect, anyone using racial slurs, being offensive or just detrimental to gameplay experience via TKing or exploiting glitches, is going to be removed from that server forever. Now imagine dozens and dozens of custom maps running on that server, which you will get for free, because IWs not making them. Then imagine entire communities and forums built around that one room (server). You recognize people who visit that same room, you befriend them, you have fun with these familiar folks. The story goes on, and that's what were missing. All of it is gone."

read that and you'll know why that just kills the game for the PC community.

I would rather have the delay than no dedicated servers. Looking forward to 8 on 8 action on PC, with host dropping out.
Thanks but no thanks, I'll spend my money on something else.

One of the reasons I was considering this game for purchase, was when I heard co-op was now an available mode. But, then I read it is only a two person co-op mode? I guess it is better then no co-op at all.. but at least make it four or so players.

Then I read the single player mission would be about the same length as CoD4, which I thought was way to short.

Now I read about no dedicated servers and such.....

Well, I most likely not buy it... to similar sounding to COD4. CoD4 was good for a while, but the single player mission was so short and the online play got boring after a while. I still play it once in a while, but I have moved on. There are other games coming out, soon, that I would probably spend my money on over this title.

Pretty much explains all that is going on with the PC. As Itswald0x said, the console fanboys don't get it. I was expecting this to be my game to play for the year, but it seems that dream is now gone. Everyone in my clan is pulling out, my friends in college are pulling out (their console versions as well), and even my friends on the public Ventrilo I go to are pulling out. They may patch it later, but as far as pre-orders are concerned, it is really hurting IW. Consoles do not have a big of a share in this game as the fanboys think btw.

At the moment the online petition (not sure how many fake signed users there are) is at 68,000 which at $60 per game is about $4.1 million. Again, that is if each petition is legit.

At first I was glad that there was no delay, then I found out that there would be no dedicated servers. My clan will be losing money because of this as we had two other clans set up to join us on our server. So imagine this happening with all the gaming server farms out there now losing business. IW will be seeing a bit of a dent in it's bottom line, my preorder is canceled as is most of my clan's. If they do decide to get a dedicated server option then so be it, but until they announce that it's there I won't get it.

This no dedicated servers think sucks real hard. Glad I didnt pre-order so I can see how this turns out. If they arent gonna give us that, and pc and console gamers are all connecting to this stupid thing to match make games, then they should atleast let us PC gamers annihilate the console gamers to make us feel a little better.

I thought were supposed to be getting more advanced, not less, in our gaming. The matched up games was on of the reasons I took my ps3 version of COD:WAW back to the store.

This game is dead to PC players everywhere. I am in a Clan for CoD-MW with our own server. We have alot of regular non-clan members who play on our server. We enforce the server rules, run punk-buster and insist on people acting like adults. We also have a mod server and participate in TWL 4v4 ladder matches.

You can have none of that in CoD-MW2. We where all GREATLY looking forward to this game. None of us are planning on getting it now. While many would have purchased it before, now many people world wide will just pirate it to play the single player game.

I never really got excited about it, sure some of the early footage got my attention but not enough to get excited over. To me it just looks like COD4 with some new stuff and new maps. And what's with "min specs will be soon"? it should be pretty damn close to COD4.

Wow, I was going to get the PC version.
now that there is no dedicated servers, I'll settle for the xbox 360 version.
Wait, maybe that was their strategy. They want more PC gamers to migrate to consoles, by removing features that make online gaming on the PC so special.
On second thought, I won't buy any version of this game.

I had planned on running out on the release date and buying a copy. Now I don't plan to at all. I like Cod4 for pc and the community that surrounds it. If anyone of you have ever played any of the Socom series on console, you know why this is such a bad thing. Screaming 13 year old kids rattling off every curse word under the sun, wall hacks, spawn campers, and glitchers galore. That is simply not an environment that I enjoy. Nor will I spend 60 bucks and have to put up with that. So, Infinity Ward you can keep your overpriced game. I'll just wait for the next fps that WILL SUPPORT DEDICATED SERVER AND MODS!

No delay fine, that's great, but why on earth would I pay more than what is typical for PC games, and get less? No dedicated servers? Think I might just pass on MW2 until Activision gets their ACT together.

Sign the Petition!

As far as I'm concerned, I wont be buying this game. I canceled my preorder, and I doubt I'll even make the effort to torrent this.

They just threw away the PC gaming community they've worked so hard to develop all these years. Goodbye IW. You've been cheating on us with the Console. But don't bother crawling back when you realize the PC community is vital.

I'm sure they are shaking in their boots about a couple thousand people not buying the PC version of their game. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of COD4 outsold the PC version by almost 7:1 and that margin is going to be even larger this time around because of a much large console install base. The fact of the matter is that PC versions of games are on the back burner now because there isn't as much money to be made.

There are already over 70,000 petition signatures, promising not to buy this game unless there is dedi and mod support. In case you cant count, that's just over 4 million dollars in lost sales. And this petition hasn't even been up over the entire weekend.

Maybe you're wealthy enough to scoff off 4 or 5 million dollars (Or more likely sitting on your parents couch eating their food and using their electricity) But activision wont.

lol. 70,000 signatures? Oh wow! Now you have them scared. Just like those hundreds of thousands of signatures really effected the release of Left 4 Dead 2? IW could care less about your 70,000 or so signatures. There are about 30 million more consoles on the market I think they'll exchange your 70,000 signatures for a couple million more sales on the console. Go ahead and don't buy the game, IW could literally care less. Whether or not PC gamers cry and whine and boycott the game they are going to make hundreds of millions in revenue from this game so go right ahead. The only people missing out are the names on that signature. Hey, good for you guys!Petitions = worthless. Does Blizzard care about the petitions related to Starcraft?
Nope.

I don't want to get into any flame war or anything.. I'm just curious where you found the sales data for the PC version?

I found some numbers for COD4:MW

X360 = 7.83 million units
PS3 = 4.66 million units
DS = .62 million units

Total = approx 13.11 million units sold for consuls.

That is as much I could find... for some reason I'm not finding PC sales numbers. I looked for curiosity sake.. but I hit a dead end. I guess what people say is it is hard to account for all the digital sales numbers for the PC.

Your 7:1 ratio, going by the numbers up top, put it at about 1.87 million PC copies sold. Does that sound right? I would have thought it was more due to the popularity of the game.

Can anyone find some sales numbers for PC?

I know, 70,000 people don't matter, right? Lets not mention that those 70,000 signatures came to be in less than 3 days. And you're absolutely right, if IW doesn't fix this problem, they don't care about the PC gamer. Which means one thing, I wont be buying the game.

Who's missing out then, hmmm? Not me. I'll gladly spend my 60 bucks somewhere else. You go right ahead and spend yours on an 8 hour single player campaign. No one cares how you waste your money. And no one will be playing multiplayer with you either.

  • By Travis Meacham Maybe the gamer on your Christmas list is more of the creative type, and you'd like to get a gift that encourages their creative side and their love of games. If that's the case, the FPS Creator from Enteractive and The Game Creators could fit that bill perfectly. The FPS Creator is a program for PCs that allows users to create complete first-person shooter games without writing a single line of code. It uses a simple drag-and-drop interface consisting of a set of pre-fab objects - weapons, furniture and enemies - and a design space where game levels may be constructed. It takes a little getting used to, but with some patience and the manual's step-by-step instructions, your gamer will be off and creating in no time. FPS Creator is packed with potential, and tools to help you realize same. FPS Creator reminded me of the Neverwinter Nights Toolset that came with both NWN games. The interface is pretty similar, and both use an object-oriented, scripting-supported graphical interface. FPS Creator can only take a game-builder so far without doing some coding, though. While it can design levels, drop in pre-made enemies, configure some simple A.I. routines, and populate each level with weapons, objects and ammo, those who really want to get into the finer workings of game design, will have to learn some scripting. Thankfully, FPS Creator has an active forum attached to its website. It offers a multitude of tutorials on using this tool, scripting basics, and even entire scripts gamers can copy and paste to suit their needs. Bear in mind that these sorts of game-creation tools deliver only what builders put into them. Novices won't build something to rival Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but they might learn the basics of videogame design and level construction. Also, for anyone who's ever considered a career in game design, FPS Creator will give them a real taste of the work involved. This isn't a game unto itself, but it is an easy-to-use tool that introduces people to level design for first-person shooters. FPS Creator takes a little work, but creative types will find the results rewarding, and just might end up getting involved in a mod community when all is said and done.

  • Our test system for this article employs the Asrock 939 Dual SATA 2 motherboard, which is packed with an abundance of upgrade-oriented features. It supports native 8X AGP, PCI Express x16, single- and dual-core Socket 939 processors with dual-channel DDR memory, and even socket AM2 CPUs and DDR2 memory with a daughter board, which we used for testing. While searching online auction sites, we have seen people spending $200 or more for a Socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 4800+. It’s one of the fastest Socket 939 dual-core CPUs produced, but the device also represents a lot of money considering you can buy an even faster AM2 Athlon X2 for well under $100. Those stuck with Socket 939 will need to search the Web long and hard for a well-priced dual-core for their motherboard, but our AM2 compatible motherboard gives us the convenience of opting for an AM2 CPU with very little trouble and expense. We chose the following CPUs to examine the effects they have on gaming performance. First is the AMD Athlon 64 4000+. It’s base don the San Diego design, runs at 2.4 GHz, sports 1 MB L2 cache, and is one of the faster single-core desktop CPUs made. The direct comparison dual-core to this device is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2.4 GHz 1 MB cache per core). Next, we chose the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 + dual-core, which has a 2.2 GHz Manchester architecture with 512 KB L2 cache per core. The single-core direct comparison would be the A64 3500+, so our A64 4000+ should have an advantage both in clock speed and L2 cache in single-threaded applications. And lastly, the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ AM2 dual-core is a 2.8 GHz Windsor design with 1 MB L2 cache per core. With these three CPUs, we should get a good look at single- versus dual-core in gaming and have a good idea about how CPU clock speeds affect game play. Tested Hardware Motherboard Asrock 939 Dual SATA 2 Bios vs. P 2.30 Asrock AM2 CPU Board RAM 2 GB (2 * 1 GB) dual-channel Adata DDR 400 (3-3-3-8) for Socket 939 2 GB (2 *1GB) dual-channel Corsair DDR2 533 (4-4-4-12) for Socket AM2 Video Cards XFX GeForce 8800 GS 384 MB PCI Express 580MHz core/ 700(1400) MHz memory HIS Radeon HD 4850 512 MB PCI Express 625 MHz core/ 993 (1986) MHz memory Sound Card Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Hard Drive Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache SATA 3.0 Gb/s Power Supply Antec EarthWatts 430 W OS Windows XP Professional 32 bit Service Pack 2 Display Driver Nvidia ForceWare 174.74 AMD Catalyst 8.8 Benchmarks 3DMark05 v. 1.3.0 3DMark06 v. 1.1.0 F.E.A.R. v.1.08 Far Cry v.1.4 Need For Speed Carbon 1.4 Test Drive Unlimited 1.66A Oblivion 1.2 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 1.4 Crysis 1.2

  • Next up is Call of Duty 4 Modern Combat, released in November 2007. The game is multi-threaded and full of intense action. Choppy FPS are not going to make it an easy and enjoyable fight, so let’s see if our three processors are up to the task. Benchmarking CoD4 is more difficult than the other games tested so far. We could do a custom time demo from multiplayer, but decided to use Fraps and record actual game play performance. This was no small task though, as getting consistent results is harder than in the other games we have tested so far. The cut scenes are consistent and may be okay for comparing GPUs, but they proved to show little scaling among these CPUs and did not reflect game play on this aging system. We instead use the War Pig mission for intense combat, and crank settings to maximum including 16xAF. There were more fluctuations in results compared to the other games so this time each test was run five times and the results averaged together. One look and it’s easy to see COD4 is multi-threaded. Despite lower clock speeds, the X2 4200+ is able to double the average FPS of the A64 4000+ at low resolution. The once mighty single-core CPU limits performance at all resolutions. The X2 5600+ with its high clock speeds provided the best gaming experience of the trio. One thing’s for sure: before investing in a new graphics card in hopes of seeing COD4 cranked up in all its glory, make sure you at least have a capable dual- or quad-core CPU in the system. Gamers that have a single-core PC will need to tweak and reduce settings or suffer through some extremely choppy battles.
