Sharp to put 108" LCD TV into production
Next newsHannover (Germany) - Sharp has brought all three of the firm's existing 108" LCD TVs to Hannover. Previously shown at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, the company now said that it is planning to sell "customizable" versions of the TV.
Of course, at this stage, the three TVs remain prototypes and have not yet received model numbers. Each 108" TV was produced from one 8G glass panel and covers a screen area of 94" x 53". According to Sharp, the TV effectively shows not just a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels), but 2160p (4096 x 2160 pixels).
Hans Kleis, CEO of Sharp Europe confirmed that the company does not consider the 108" TVs prototypes that will collect dust in a backroom closet, but will be put into production "sometime in the future." It is unclear when the TV will be available, but Kleis mentioned that it will be a "highly customizable" LCD TV that, if customers want, can be accessorized with diamonds.
From Las Vegas to Hannover: The 108" LCD TV has made it to Cebit and on the day before the official opening, at least the media was already excited about the gigantic TV - in this case it is German TV station Pro7.
Pricing has not been announced and Kleis declined to provide even some guidelines how much this monster will cost. However, put a limited production, a low yield rate, customization options and that priceless I-want-that factor together and we can only imagine what price ranges Sharp may be thinking about.
As a reminder, last year's record holder, a Panasonic 103"er (and still the largest commercially available production plasma TV), carries a price tag of $70,000.
