Benchmark Results: Far Cry 2
Next on our benchmark list of first-person shooters is a newer title: Far Cry 2
With no AA applied, we can see that dual-card configurations of 4830s or 8800 GTs are formidable, providing performance comparable to the Radeon HD 4870 X2 up to the 1680x1050 resolution. It’s data like this that lets the consumer know that if you have a 1650x1080 monitor and don’t use anti-aliasing, then your money isn’t well spent on a 4870 X2.
As far as the 4830 versus 8800 GT battle goes, we see another very close race. The 8800 GT seems to have a slight advantage in SLI mode at lower resolutions, but this advantage disappears and is somewhat reversed by the time resolution is raised to 1920x1200.
It’s quite notable that even at the highest settings, Far Cry 2 is playable even with single video cards. The Far Cry 2 engine looks great, but is much more hardware-friendly than Crysis.
Now, let’s examine what happens when we throw 4x AA into the fray:
Increasing the eye candy in this fashion shows us more of the same story, with close results from both camps. Really, only 1280x1024 is playable at these settings on either the 4830 or the 8800 GT, whether in multi-card or single-card configurations.
