Chrome Overtakes Safari As Number 3 Browser

Google's Chrome browser isn't even two years old but it scored a huge win this week when it overtook Apple's Safari as the number three browser in the U.S. According to StatCounter, Chrome overtook Safari last week and is now the third-most-popular browser behind Internet Explorer and Firefox.

As it stands, Chrome accounts or 8.97 percent of the browser market, with Safari coming in just behind with 8.88 percent. Microsoft's Internet Explorer remains the number one browser for the U.S. with a market share of 52 percent, followed by Mozilla Firefox with 28.5 percent.

"This is quite a coup for Google as they have gone from zero to almost 10 percent of the U.S. market in under two years," said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter. "There is a battle royal going on between Google and Apple in the internet browser space (Chrome v Safari) as well as in the mobile market (Android v iPhone)."

According to StatCounter, Chrome has been miles ahead of Safari in the global browser market for quite some time. The Google browser accounts for 9.4 percent of the market compared to 4 percent for Safari.

How about a local counter? Where do we stand as far as browser usage for THG?

This is because most Mac users don't even use Safari. I bet that a good portion of those Safari hits are from iPhones (no viable alternatives).

I have to say though that I can see Chrome overtaking Firefox in another year or 2. Its just so much faster and more stable. Once it catches up a bit more in the plugin realm, it will be far and away the better choice.

Internet Explorer only hold that much market share because it's been around longer... it's basically **** now :/ My support is for Firefox and Chrome

The first set of numbers is for US users; the second set is for global users.

    still Firefox fan...

I don't like tab placement in Chrome where it's above the address bar instead of below...

it might be few milliseconds fast but when you just browse, I can hardly notice the difference...

plus next Firefox 4 is supposed to be miles faster than Chrome...

Much better suited for mobile browsing as everything goes through Opera where it all gets optimized before being sent on to your phone. Of course that potentially has security issues, but it also is a lot better than crappy safari.

Firefox 4 may be faster but dont you think the next Chrome will be faster then FF4? The next Chrome (6 I think) will have to beat IE9, Firefox 4, and whatever Safari is doing for macs.
