Amped Crams Range Extender Tech into Plug-In Form Factor

Amped Wireless said that it has crammed the tech used in its desktop Wi-Fi Range Extenders into a discreet plug-in form factor without losing coverage. Now available, the REC10 High Power 600 mW Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender will grab your current router's Wireless N signal and extend/amplify the network up to 6,500 square feet.

"Whether it is concrete, cinder block walls or simply sheer distance preventing your Internet signal from reaching where you need it, the REC10 packs enough power into a small package to overcome these obstacles," the company promises.

Traditional routers have an output power of a mere 50 milliwatts (mW), meaning they provide around 1,500 square feet of coverage. The REC10 features twelve times the power output – 600 mW – making it possible to provide up to 6,500 square feet of coverage from the extender's location. Keep in mind that it needs to be located in an area where it can pick up a good signal from the source router. Otherwise, the extended coverage will be somewhat laggy.

According to Amped, the RED10 measures just 2.75" x 4" in size and plugs directly into an electrical outlet. Users can set up the device wirelessly by accessing its Web-based interface, but there's also an Ethernet port for connecting non-wireless devices like a desktop, laptop, console, Blu-ray player and more.

In addition to its coverage, the REC10 also has security features including parental controls like restricted access for certain users and time of day schedules for when the network is available and when it is not. There's also adjustable Wi-Fi coverage settings to control how far your extended wireless network reaches. The Range Extender also supports a secure push button setup for WPS enabled devices.

Unfortunately, this Wireless N device is not dual-band, meaning it doesn't offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels. Instead it features dual 2.4 GHz 600 mW amplifiers and dual low noise amplifiers providing wireless speeds up to 300 Mbps. Customers wanting both bands may want to investigate the less-discreet SR20000G model.

The REC10 High Power 600 mW Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender retails for $79.99 (USD). It can be purchased now at www.ampedwireless.com, and will also begin appearing in retail outlets nationwide starting this week.

The size of most components have been steadily reduced. This comes as no surprise.

Seems to be almost too powerful :)
