King's Quest Fan Project is Alive Again, for FREE

Back in March, we were sad to learn that a fan-based non-profit King's Quest project had been extinguished by Activision, the new owners of the IP.

After a public outcry, Activision decided to revisit its original decision, and now we'll soon be granted a new King's Quest. The Silver Lining development team wrote in its blog:

In a wonderful turn of events, Activision reached out to the Phoenix Online team a few months ago with a desire to revisit their decision regarding The Silver Lining. After negotiations, the C&D has been officially rescinded, and Phoenix Online has been granted a non-commercial license to release The Silver Lining!

This means that fans will be able to download the next (fan fiction) chapter of King's Quest for FREE on July 10 – and that's just the first episode!

Check out some of the screenshots, artwork and trailer below.

  • Now they need to do this to Square-Enix and get that Chrono Trigger remake up and running again. Or just hire the people, and pay them to make it, I'd pay for 3D Chrono Trigger. Jeeze. Chrono Resurection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZVQ5O3R4lU

Hooray! The original Kings Quest was one of the best games I've *ever* played.

dwaveSweet, good job Activision, glad to hear you aren't just a bunch of jerks. But they were jerks, only public outcry convinced them to do a 180. The 180 was done to save face, not because Activision has good guys in charge who care about your gaming. That is unless they can profit from it.

If Activision have any sense then they'll follow LucasArts' lead and remake the King's Quest series (maybe Robin Hood too) with updated graphics.

Is the remake true to the original where you died every other step if you didn't know what you were doing or are they softening it up for today's gamer? Personally, I'm a fan of the old-school, 'Nintendo Hard' style of game.

I always had a tough time figuring out what I was supposed to do in those games. I can only remember one (the one that caused me grief) and I don't recall which one it was... Oh well.
