Attn. Adventure Gamers: Monkey Island is Back!
The return of the new and old.
While adventure games are nowhere near as popular as they once were in the classic days of PC gaming, Telltale games have been keeping the tradition going alongside a new concept in games – episodic releases.
Combine old with new and this summer and we’ll be getting Monkey Island. Telltale games will be making five monthly episodes of Tales of Monkey Island for the PC and WiiWare, with the first one launching on July 7.
Check out the trailer below:
LucasArts isn’t just dumping Monkey Island on Telltale, but rather it is working on a game for fans of the series. Also hitting this summer will be Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which faithfully recreates every scene from the original release from 1990, but gives it an optional layer of fresh paint. Players can switch back and forth from the new painted art and the original pixilated renditions.

HHHHHHHHHH
*breathing heavily*
Please tell me this isn't a joke, if you're messing with me, I'm going into a murderous rage.
Remaking a classic - Good.
Doing a horrid job - Bad.
Seriously, looks like a flash game...
If you're remaking something, make it modern.

I would disagree, it maybe in a vector format though, which would be smart if you want to support all resolutions (so in the future, you could play at resolutions much greater than what we have now, and it would still work great).
I loved the original.
The only thing that appealed to me in that video was the music and his hot wife.
ZOMGZOMGZOMG!!!!!
This has actually taken them much longer to get to than it should have. This was revealed much earlier in the week, possibly even monday, but definately tuesday.
It's just so freaking awesome! Let's hope the give the genre another try.

What flash games are you playing? I want to play these flash games with GC/xbox/Wii level graphics.
Awesome. I really hope they support widescreens ratios and high resolutions.
/me looks up at his Monkey Island game boxes
Yup, I'm getting it. I LOVE adventure games.
What took so long?
i'm very. very. excited about this. consoles like the wii -- and now the upcoming "control schemes" for consoles really give adventure gaming an opportunity to become a pop-culture thing.
Finally!!!!

But will they answer the most important question??
You know... How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
I thought LucasArts has dropped the PC platform when they chose release that recent Star Wars game solely on the consoles.
I loved the original Monkey Island game, I had it on the Amgia 1200 and I got to enjoy full 16 bit colour and an uncompromised music track. And since I big fan of the series I will be buying this game and the remake.
... nice to see a classic reanimated... more stuff like that would be nice... the refresh version of first five NFS, many games from Bullfrog, like Dungeon Keeper... games like Descent... Urban Asult from Microsoft, a mix of RTS and FPS... RoadRage?

All I have to say is:
You Fight Like A Dairy Farmer
long live monkey island.
@ dravis12
How appropriate, you fight like a cow.
Horribly cheesy insult sword fighting; now that's classic adventure gaming.
I heart this game so much. I'm really excited about this! and it comes out just a few days before my birthday, too. Agh, best birthday present ever!
Please redo DOTT (Day of the Tentacle), Full Throttle, and The Dig!!! Please!
We all need to be sure to pick up this game; I'm guessing this re-release will be closely watched by major studios, including LucasArts, to see if the adventure gaming market is still a valid one.
I didn't realize they were also making a new Monkey Island, I thought it was just a re-make of the original which I wasn't that excited since I already played it, but definitely excited about the new one. Its too bad they're not releasing a disc based version of the game I can put next to my "Escape from MI" but I'll be definitely getting it for PC.
Its also very heartening to know that there are so many MI lovers out there such as myself. I feel very alone in my love for these games sometimes.
While I do look forward to playing it. I do fear that it may not be successful. Younger gamers today seem to care more about graphics than anything so I doubt it will appeal to them. Plus piracy is going to be a big issue...

lol you're not alone
My favorite adventure game is still The Neverhood. Claymation for the win. Just wish they had taken higher rez photos.
C'mon, give us a new game, not a "cleaned-up" version. I loved Monkey Island and played all four.

It's is a new game, read more carefully.

I share your concern with how much acceptance the game will receive once it is released but at least its not a big-budget project so hopefully they make back their money without too much trouble.
With regards to piracy, I wouldn't even worry about it. Most people know that Monkey Island is quite an extinct species and I guarantee not a single person whose responded on this article's forum will pirate it simply because they want to see another iteration after it (and hence wants to contribute to its success). Most people who "love" a game typically want the official thing.

I'll be buying 5 copies of each.
I wonder if you can switch the Special Edition Monkey Island to voices off with text. It looses some of its charm with the voice in there.
