Windows 95 Running on an iPhone

Next news
12:01 PM - July 14, 2009 by Jane McEntegart

GoodiPhone reports that a group of developers have managed to install and run Windows 95 on the iPhone. With the help of a Bochs emulator and an original Windows 95 image, they managed to get the Microsoft OS running on Apple's iPhone. Unfortunately, it seems performance was an issue so they're eager to try the same test on an iPhone 3GS.

The developers also tried to get Windows XP running. Check out the video and screenshots below.

And for old time's sake, here's the Weezer video for "Buddy Holly", which came bundled with Windows 95.

Sigh...if only they could get it to run Windows ME. Then I'd buy an iPhone for sure.

I do appreciate the Buddy Holly video because Weezer was great back in the day, but...embedding disabled. Other than that, thanks. I love stuff like this.

They stole my idea!! Which is great to play starcraft on an iPhone if they get over the performance issues.

They did the same thing on a PSP a few years back.
Win 95 or better even 98Se is a perfect windows OS systems for Ultra mobile devices and mids. They have the processor and RAM requirements needed to run these OS'es.

Too bad they are no longer supported by MS.

The performance is just terrible on the IPhone.
Perhaps because Win95 is running as an app (or is softwarematic simulated) on the IPhone. I believe Win95 needed something like 300-400MB diskspace, 32MB Ram, a vesa compatible video card (you could also run it in monochrome), and a 386 processor to run.

Hard to imagine that a phone as advanced as the iPhone 3G (original) is slower than my old Pentium 100MHz Packard Bell computer. It was painful enough running Windows 95 on that computer.

I still have a copy of win95 for my PSP somewhere, can't recall ever running it though. I also have a factory sealed copy of win95 under my desk right next to me.

You can get Windows 3.11, 95 and 98 running on a Nokia N95 phone. Seems to be faster than the iPhone.

So, running Windows on a phone isn't exactly news. ;)

That's because the n95 was a much better phone released earlier and for less money. However, nokia's marketing team has their heads shoved up their own asses and couldn't get it out there into public eye.

It may be much harder to get it smooth since they cpu types are so different(RISC vs CISC). There may be allot of overhead for this system.

At current its useless since its soooo slow.

I expect & hope all this will change within 2 years. There will be a Windows Mobile 7 using the same kernel as Windows 7. There will also be a mobile version of the Atom. So the two should come together. No emulation needed.
I personally hate the Atom, but an Atom in a phone sounds interesting.
