Before Tom Clancy’s The Division arrives next week, Ubisoft revealed more details about the company’s post-launch content. We already knew that there would be three expansion packs later this year, but there will be some free content updates in the coming month,s as well.
The first free update, called “Incursions,” arrives in April. Incursions will introduce a new endgame activity, and players will need to form a squad with their friends in order to face a stronger set of enemies. If you manage to survive the onslaught, you’ll be rewarded with high-level weapons and equipment. The same update will also introduce loot trading, which allows you to trade your spoils of war with other teammates in your squad.
In May, another free update called “Conflict” will arrive. It will include a new Incursion mission in the Columbus Circle area, and it will also add a new, unknown feature in the Dark Zone.
We have an idea as to when the paid expansions will be available. Underground, which will take you and your team to New York City’s subways and tunnels, comes out in June. Survival arrives sometime in the summer, and it will challenge your squad to find supplies and other essential items in a difficult hostile area. The final expansion, Last Stand, comes in the winter. Part of the expansion will require you to defend your base (with the help of some automated turrets) against waves of enemies. The expansion will also add another relentless foe that you will need to defeat.
Throughout the course of “Year One,” Ubisoft will also continue to add bursts of free content such as gear sets, additional Dark Zone features, and weapons. You will also get daily and weekly assignments for another chance to gain experience and items. The company also mentioned the addition of a “Challenge” Mode, but specifics weren’t provided.
The game’s open beta attracted many players — a little over 6.4 million people, according to Ubisoft. With that many gamers potentially playing the finished product next week, the developers want to keep them busy with activities and missions. The combination of free and paid content is a step in the right direction, but we’ll have to wait until next week to see if The Division is worth the full investment.
