Google's Schmidt: We Don't Have a Google Maps for iOS 6

Since Apple's iOS 6 launched last Wednesday, the company has been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism for its new Maps application. The Cupertino-based company announced in June that it would part ways with Google and no longer offer the search giant's mapping application on Apple mobile devices. However, many users are dissatisfied with the Apple alternative. What's more, there are rumors that Google is preparing its own Maps app for iOS 6.

Speaking to a group of reporters at the Japanese launch of the Nexus 7, Google's Eric Schmidt implied that the company hasn't got a Google Maps for iOS 6. Reuters cites Schmidt as saying, "We have not done anything yet." The executive chairman added that any decision about a Google Maps for iOS 6 entering the app store would be Apple's alone. He also told reporters that he feels Apple should have kept Google Maps, but that it wasn't Google's decision to make.

"We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?" he's quoted as saying. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Apple's iOS 6 is now on 100 million devices. Speaking last week about the bugs in Maps, Apple said time and use would improve the app.

"We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it," the company told AllThingsD last week. "Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get."

So Apple forced its customers to go with their own proprietary system, and it's an inferior POS. What's new about that? Do they still not get how this works?

On the other hand, Google Maps puts major businesses in my town in vacant lots (bean fields) 1-2 miles from where they actually are.

...Why is everyone freaking out again?

Pretty soon we will all be on closed/unified platform systems. Apple system vs Google system vs Microsoft system vs Amazon system etc.

What a sucky direction the industry is headed in. (and dont even try to tell me that Google isn't just is bad - they are. They just give things away free to create their monopolies instead of doing it the traditional authoritarian way like Apple/MS)

Anything Apple touches turns to gold. Their maps will surpass Google just like their iPhones always surpass any Android device that could possibly come out since Android is a POS, clunky, garbage copycat OS of iOS anyway. Big win for Apple to get rid of Google's maps since now they have an opportunity to get ahead of them in yet another area that Google thinks they're "experts" in. Ha.

Well, Google is not as smart as I thought. As a comparison, Gates never gave up making Mac-flavored MS Office, despite it was mostly a niche market. If Apple had really driven Google Map off iOS, it's immature, unprofessional and unwise for Google to give up the platform entirely, without realizing Google Map and Android are different products. Would iOS customers switch to Android device for a free and better Map app? I believe some would, but most will not.

Knew this was gonna happen. Been stuck with Bing Maps on WindowsPhone and I hate it :D I'm sure apple will figure it out eventually, just as I'm sure the majority of iPhone users will forgive them.

I'll stick with WP at the moment, I like it.
