Back in August, UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom gave Everything Everywhere, parent company of T-Mobile and Orange, the go-ahead to launch its own 4G LTE network. Though EE's competitors are stuck waiting for the spectrum auction before rolling out their own 4G service, Ofcom approved an earlier proposal for Everything Everywhere to repurpose some of its existing mobile spectrum for LTE coverage. This week, the company provided details on when it plans to launch its 4G service.
"We are delighted to announce that the official launch of our new customer brand, EE, offering the UK’s first superfast mobile 4G and fibre broadband service, will take place on the 30th October 2012," the company said Wednesday. "This is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom, and for the people and businesses of our country who will now be able to enjoy the huge advantages of superfast 4G technology for the first time. We are very proud to be pioneering, innovating and leading our industry in launching 4G for our nation through our new EE brand."
Everything Everywhere says that its EE 4G network will cover ten cities at launch, with a further six cities covered by the end of the year. Further towns, cities and rural areas will follow, with EE coverage to reach 98 percent by 2014.
