Schmidt on Bing: MSFT Does This Every Year

In a recent interview with Fox, Google CEO Eric Schmidt put forth the appearance that he’s not worried about Microsoft’s latest search engine Bing for a number of reasons.

"It's not the first entry for Microsoft. They do this about once a year," Schmidt told the Fox Business Network earlier in the week. "I don't think Bing's arrival has changed what we're doing. We are about search, we're about making things enormously successful, by virtue of innovation."

It’s true that, over the years, Microsoft has had a number of redesigns and brand changes for its search engine. Since the launch in 1998, we’ve seen MSN Search, Windows Live Search, Live Search and now Bing. However, Microsoft seems determined to push Bing as a “decision making engine” as opposed to a search engine similar to past endeavors, and Google’s Schmidt seems to believe that that alone will stop Bing from overtaking Google.

"Google is about getting all the information and organizing it. Yahoo has a different strategy. We think ultimately Bing will evolve to a different strategy as well."

Do you think Bing could pose a significant threat to Google or Yahoo? Let us know what you think of Microsoft’s new decision making engine in the comments below.

Does anybody really care? I mean Google is status quo, but to some degree also because it's a household name. Even if Bing was much better, as long as Google provides the info I am looking for, why change. One exception in the WolframAlpha engine (which also integrates into Google if needed).

The only threat it will pose is to the project manager responsible for spending oodles of MS cash to develop this dud.

I've tried Bing mostly because I use MSN as my home page for the news & stock quotes. Seems OK. I like the feature of more info appearing when you hover the mouse over the links, but as for quality of the info it finds, I don't see a vast improvement over Live Search or Google...

Decision making engine? I saw the ads saying how it's better than a search engine and I tried it but didn't see a difference. Also, google's shopping gave me more (and better) results for what I searched for. On the other hand, I do find bing more aesthetically appealing and the travel section seems like a good move. But for normal search, I'll stick with google.

I think it is unlikely anyone can push Google of their thrown right now… But it is M$, If they decided to throw enough money and resources into Bing, It may actually end up being decent.

Bing will soar simply for one reason, it has great porn searching and lets you actually preview by hovering over videos, kudos!

I love Bing personally. Its a very pretty search engine that gives results normally equal to Google. I use Bing over Google now just because it is prettier, and the mouse-over video search thing.
