Mali 450 GPU Surfaces in AmLogic SoC

The latest GPU from ARM has surfaced in the AmLogic’s AML8726-M8 quad-core processor.

The AmLogic AML8726-M8 features four A9 cores clocked at 2 GHz, is built using TSMC’s new 28 nm process, and supports dual-channel DDR3 and LPDDR3, 64-bit ECC, and a 128-bit memory interface. The integrated Mali 450 MP8 GPU features 8 cores clocked at 250 MHz and is capable of computing 45 GFLOPS, and offers a fill rate of 2,000 Mpix/s.

Aside from offering “good gaming performance,” the Mali 450 supports 4K Video and Ultra HD decoding along with a host of other media standards including Dolby DS1 and DTS. Notebook Check further reports that the Mali 450 will also be available in a six-core variant, the Mali MP6, which will reportedly offer 25 percent less performance.

The AmLogic AML8726-M8 SoC will be launched in Q3 2013.

    45 Gflops? I'd never have guessed it was that low. That's still lower than 2004's geforce 6800gtx.

    The M8 is an 8-core Mali 450 GPU. The M6 is a 6-core Mali 450 GPU. The AmLogic SoC that the article is about is a chip that pairs four 2GHz Cortex A9 cores with the 8-core M8 Mali 450 GPU. Another variant of the SoC that has four A9 cores and the M6 6-core Mali 450 GPU would have 25% less GPU cores and, appropriately, 25% less GPU performance.

    True, but this is fanless and uses somewhere around 5% of the energy. And this is a Chinese chip, not exactly comparable to something like the Tegra 4.

    The Mail 450 is a low-end solution.
