Microsoft's Surface tablet hasn't been on the market for long but rumors of a next generation Surface have been doing the rounds for a while now. The latest comes from the Wall Street Journal, which claims Microsoft's new line of Surface tablets will include a 7-inch model.
The Wall Street Journal cites people familiar with the company's plans that say Microsoft is working on its new line of tablets and that a 7-inch Surface is set to go into production this year. If true, it's not exactly surprising news. With 7-inch solutions from Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and many more, Microsoft can't afford to be missing from such a popular category. Indeed, the Wall Street Journal's sources say Microsoft had no plans for 7-inch tablets last year, but that the company needed to respond to the growing popularity of smaller tablets.
Of course, if Microsoft is planning a 7-inch surface tablet, the company will need to seriously considering pricing for the device. The Surface and Surface Pro were both priced quite high. Despite the fact that they are full fledged computers, it's not hard to imagine tablet shoppers shying away from such steep prices in favor of lower-cost alternatives. After all, not everyone looking to buy a tablet is out to get something so powerful. In the 7-inch market, Microsoft is facing some stiff competition, especially when you consider the competitive price points of Google and Amazon's solutions.
