AMD Overclocking Contest: We Have a Winner!

Last month we launched the AMD CPU Virtual Overclocking Contest, and today we’re proud to announce our first winner.

Less than a month ago, we had an open call for AMD CPU enthusiasts to run their Phenom processors as fast as they could go, using any means necessary to achieve the highest overclock possible.

Today we’re proud to announce that the top overclocking honors belong to Travis Jank, AKA V2-V3, who was able to take his AMD Phenom II X4 940 to a chart-topping 5.6 GHz using a 275 MHz bus speed and 20.5x multiplier. Keep in mind that the Phenom II X4 940 runs at a default speed of 3.0 GHz!

Travis ran his champion CPU on an Asus M4A79 Deluxe with a 2 GB kit from Corsair. For video, he paired his motherboard with the Asus EAH4350 Silent (512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4350).

Congratulations to Travis! We’ll be flying him out to our offices here in Los Angeles, all expenses paid for, to receive the prizes and have an opportunity to replicate or even exceed the winning overclock! But before all that, we’re going to be holding part two of our competition. Those of you with a Phenom 9950 Black Edition will get your chance this month to push your processor to the limit and join the winners’ circle.

Stay tuned for more when the contest opens tomorrow!

I wonder if his choice of gpu played a roll. The 4350 would consume very little wattage leaving more power resources for the CPU.

Here is a link to a youtube video of some people in Los Vegas on 1/10/09. They ran 3DMark 05 and got a score of over 45,000 and Overclocked it to 6.5 GHZ. They used Liquid Helium. http://www.youtube.comwatch?v=wB0JodKgZ0A.
They used the Phenom II 940 and broke the world record.
