With its many titles in the EA Sports franchises and shooters such as the Battlefield series and the recently released Star Wars Battlefront, it’s obvious that EA thrives on online competitive multiplayer. The next move, then, seems inevitable: The company is launching its own eSports division, which will be known as the EA Competitive Gaming Division (CGD), and its first leader, Peter Moore, was picked from within EA’s own ranks.
Moore’s current position in the company is COO, and he will continue to hold the title until the end of the fiscal year on March 31, 2016. After that, he takes on two titles: Executive Vice President for EA and Chief Competition Officer for the Competitive Gaming Division. Todd Sitrin will work under Moore as Senior Vice President and General Manager. Sitrin is another EA veteran, with experience in marketing for the company’s global teams, as well as for EA Sports.
More details are coming in the next few months, but right now, EA has a few games in the eSports scene. The company noted that the die-hard players of the FIFA soccer games are competing in the final season of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. The Electronic Sports League is also holding its own championship for Battlefield 4, where the final eight teams play against each other for the prize money and coveted trophy. Even the Madden football franchise has a professional scene -- the EA Sports Madden NFL Live Challenge -- which allows both professional and amateur players to compete in the tournament for a grand prize of $20,000.
