Dothan Over Netburst: Is The Pentium 4 A Dead End?

What It Shares With The Pentium 4

Both processors use a very similar bus protocol. The maximum frequency of the P4's front side bus is 200 MHz, while that of the Pentium M currently tops out at 133 MHz. In both cases, information is transferred four times per clock cycle, which is called quad data rate or QDR; Intel calls this a quad-pumped bus. The core voltages are also nearly identical: the P4 Prescott requires 1.4 V while the Pentium M Dothan runs at 1.35 V.

All Pentium M processors include support for MMX, SSE and SSE 2. The SSE 3 instruction set will only be incorporated into the next processor generation, as will the EM64T extension (Extended Memory 64 Technology) that is required for use with Windows XP x64 Edition.

The increasing thermal dissipation makes it obvious why FSB533 is the upper limit in the notebook sector.
