eBay: Dec 2 Biggest Mobile Shopping Day, Not Cyber Monday

Although Black Friday recorded its biggest online shopping sales figures, while the subsequent week of Cyber Monday saw three billion dollar-plus days, eBay has confirmed that its biggest mobile shopping day was Sunday, December 2.

The online auction e-tailer revealed that Sunday, December 2 now stands as the biggest mobile shopping day ever for eBay Marketplaces in the U.S. and PayPal globally.

Steve Yankovich, vice president of mobile at eBay, said that Sunday is typically a "day of relaxation," but due to consumers always having their smartphones present, it's straightforward and appealing to shop whenever they feel like it. "We're in a paradigm shift," he said.

In addition to December 2 being the biggest mobile shopping day for eBay Marketplaces, PayPal, which is owned by the auction site, saw its total global mobile-payment volume during the same day exceed Cyber Monday by more than $1 million. Subsequently, December 2 is now the biggest mobile shopping day in the history of PayPal.

While mobile commerce was in its infancy four years ago, eBay expects to experience more than $10 billion in mobile transactions from its mobile apps, which boasts over 100 million users, and PayPal this year.
