In spite of our insistence on a pressed disc for the highest-quality reads, LG’s UH08 achieved an average of only 3.59x and a maximum read of 4.78x when playing our movie. Looking at the graph, we doubt this 8x-rated drive would have reached even 6x speed had the disk used its full 25GB capacity.
Lite-On and Plextor provide identical performance, with a 6x average and 8x maximum read. A closer look at the graph indicates that the true limit at the disc’s outer edge would have been slightly more than 8x, if only the layer were completely full.
Stuck with the compromise of using a CD-R rather than a pressed disc to get close to the media’s outer edge, LG still exceeded 31x average and 41x maximum read. Lite-On and Plextor again offer identical performances, reaching well beyond 36x average and 48x maximum reads.
