Samsung Announces Galaxy Tab 4 Tablet Line

On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics unveiled three Galaxy Tab 4 tablets in 7-inch, 8-inch and 10.1-inch form factors. All three feature thin bezels, a textured backing, and a lightweight profile. They also provide a Multi User Mode so that each user has their own customizable profile, and a Kids Mode so that parents can set limits for their children.

"This latest addition to Samsung's Galaxy Tab family combines versatility with value," said Michael Abary, senior vice president of mobile computing, Samsung Electronics America. "The HD display, multitasking capabilities and easy sharing features make the Galaxy Tab 4 a great fit for both consumers and businesses."

All three tablets come pre-loaded with entertainment apps like Netflix and WatchOnly, as well as Google Play, Dropbox, Sirius XM and Audible.com. The tablets are also ready for the work environment, providing built-in features that support enterprise-grade VPN corporate email, on-device encryption and scalable mobile device management.

The three new tablets will be offered in black and white models, and share some of the same hardware including the 1.2 GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, a screen resolution of 1280 x 800, and Google's Android 4.4 "KiKat" operating system. Here are the specs and the cost (Wi-Fi only) of each:

The new tablets will be available for purchase from major retailers nationwide on May 1 with pre-sales beginning today, April 24. This summer, AT&T will offer the 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 4; Sprint will offer the 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 4 7.0; T-Mobile will offer the 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 4 8.0; and Verizon Wireless will offer the 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and 10.1.

    I'm utterly confused by the spec's chosen. I think that generally, the high-end SoC's are slightly overpowered for where the software and services are at, and I hate seeing absurdly high ppi displays in portable devices (above 1080p). However...I think Android 4.1+ really needs a decent 2GB of RAM (especially when manufacturer skins are operating on top of stock android), and 1280x800 is low for a 10" screen. 7", I think it's okay.

    Confused... Bet their profit margin is going to be pretty nice given such low-end spec's!

    Those specs do look like a hybrid between the N7v1 and N7v2.

    At least they come with 4G/LTE and an SD-slot, which is probably enough to seal the deal for someone having to pick between a $170 N7v1 and the $200 7" GTab4. For the other two devices, I'm not convinced many people would be willing to pay $70-150 extra for only 1-3" extra space and otherwise 2012-vintage specs available on $125-150 devices.

    Only if they actually manage to sell those things. I can imagine the 7" variant selling fairly well since there aren't many sub-$200 tablets with 4G/LTE and most sub-$200 tablets are roughly in the same spec ballpark. I'm really skeptical about the 8" and 10" models though.

    i think we should adopt a new standard for tablet displays
    PLEASE

    1280x800 OK for 7", but definitely nothing lower
    1920x1080 (FHD) for 8" PLEASE minimum ; 1200 would be nice
    2560x1440p for 10.1"

    I'm on a Note 8.0 which is the 1280x800 but really, feels a little...lacking at that size. i can imagine 1080 being a little too small on a 7" so for the sake of scaling i think this would make the most sense for tablets of each size group.

    Funny how Samsung is putting 1080p panels in 5 inch phones, but 1280x800 panels in a screen with 4 times the surface area.

    It's like they aren't even trying.

    Guess everyone is going to stick to Nexus Tablets and maybe even Kindles.
