Windows 10 May 2021 Update Is Available Now, 10X Being Integrated Into Desktop OS
This update is focused on bug fixes and quality of life improvements
Microsoft has pulled the trigger on the May 2021 update and the patch is available to download right now. The update comes with a couple of new features like Windows hello multicamera support, the removal of the legacy Microsoft Edge browser, and a ton of bug fixes and other quality of life improvements to Windows 10.
If you want to download the update, you can either use Microsoft's Update Assistant/Media Creation Tool or manually "check for updates" through Windows Update (in Settings). However, not every PC will have 21H1 available if you use the Windows Update method. This is perfectly normal as Microsoft releases new updates in 'waves' to ensure the reliability of the product.
If you use your PC for work or you need a stable system, we recommend waiting until Windows Update automatically installs 21H1, instead of manually updating to it. While this new May update does have a lot of bugs and improvements, plenty of Microsoft's updates in the past have had major problems upon the first release.
Microsoft's focus on bug fixes and quality of life for the 21H1 update makes a lot of sense, as the companies next big feature update for Windows 10 codenamed 'Sun Valley' is supposed to be the largest update to Windows 10 we've ever seen. Sun Valley plans to give Windows 10 a big overhaul to its user interface and also bring in features from its now canceled Windows 10X operating system.
Microsoft finally addressed the state of Windows 10X in a blog post about the May 2021 update. Reports of Windows 10X being shelved started showing earlier this month.
"Following a year-long exploration and engaging in conversations with customers, we realized that the technology of Windows 10X could be useful in more ways and serve more customers than we originally imagined. We concluded that the 10X technology shouldn’t just be confined to a subset of customers," vice president of program management John Cable wrote.
"Instead of bringing a product called Windows 10X to market in 2021 like we originally intended, we are leveraging learnings from our journey thus far and accelerating the integration of key foundational 10X technology into other parts of Windows and products at the company."
We're unlikely to see too much of that here, but the upcoming 21H2 update may have a far bigger redesign.

CrispySilicon It's not happy.....Reply
I downloaded the update, which went very quick. Asked me to reboot, which took quite a while, a good two minutes. System came up fine, but windows update now stuck, doesn't show update complete.

Additionally, the shutdown/restart button always shows update option, and it doesn't update anything when I choose those. -
Makaveli I just installed it on a test laptop. It booted to the login screen then on login machine shutdown. This happened about 3 times and on the 4th boot up everything is now working. I have this laptop just for stuff like this so I will hold off on updating my primary desktop until I do more testing.Reply -

TechyInAZ If you have older systems, I'd especially say wait since usually Microsoft tests older hardware last and not first. If you have the latest hardware like Zen2/3 CPU or 10th-11th gen Intel Core CPUs, you should be okay. For the most part.Reply
Another good practice is to make sure your GPU drives are on the latest update, this is generally important since Intel, AMD and Nvidia do make some tweaks to improve integration with the latest Windows 10 builds.
I installed 21H1 on my Ryzen 5 3600 rig, and its butter smooth. No bugs whatsoever, the only bug I had was a small issue where the start menu wouldn't pop up, but it rectified itself pretty quickly, plus I restarted to make sure everything was fine, and yup that's the only bug I've gotten.
I did get that issue too where windows update said to reboot to update, just igore it, if you leave the system as be, it'll fix itself. I've always had small bugs like this on major windows 10 updates and it won't interfere at all with your system usage.
With this update,I've noticed animation and speed improvements with Windows in general, even scrolling is smoother and I'm not getting weird hiccups with the settings app or the search bar anymore. -
passivecool While this new May update does have a lot of bugs and improvements,
This may be what you mean, but I daresay it is not what you meant to write.
the removal of the legacy Microsoft Edge browser
At first I thought this was a mistake and you meant IE.
To avoid confusion I might add that CHROMIUM Edge is the current MS browser and is still included.
Anyone using the pre-Chromium version of Edge will have been nagged to upgrade for at least half a year. -
Drazen I hope some of hackers are reading this.Reply
Please, do not attack people or health systems, please show Microsoft how Windows users feel before and after Windows update.
If one is lucky for PC to be fully operational after update, why, for the sake why Microsoft do you revert some settings to default, eg Temp folder and how do you dare to uninstall my software without asking me!!!!????
Please, place Microsoft PC/servers into same basket we are in. -

Windows update works here, it wants me to restart for a .net update, it can wait.
what did it do to temp folder?
it went a little mad finding all my usb devices after restart but that didn't last long
