System Builder Marathon: Sub-$1000 PC

Case: Cooler Master Centurion 590

Durability and good looks are nice things to have in a low-cost case, but cooling is more significant in a performance system. Fortunately, Cooler Master has added numerous fan holes to several of its low-cost models without sacrificing the quality fit, finish, and materials the company is known for.

Unfortunately, we can’t find these new models for the same $50-60 price as earlier mainstream parts, but at $70 we felt the Centurion 590’s support for additional cooling was worth the extra cost.

The Centurion 590 carries over some of the best features from Cooler Master’s high-end Stacker series, with fully ventilated mesh panels covering a total of nine 5.25” bays. A removable hard drive cage puts up to four 3.5” drives in the place of three large bays, and Cooler Master also includes an external 5.25” to 3.5” form factor adapter. With these adapters installed, five empty 5.25” bays remain.

The front also features a port panel, but it’s not removable. People who prefer their desktop computers to sit on top of their desks might have an uncomfortable reach, but at least they’ll be able to see them (unlike top-mounted ports).

Inside we find tool-free clips for drive bays and cards, though screws are required for attaching almost anything else. The Centurion 590 also puts its power supply at the bottom, which is the only reason we almost didn’t get it. Let us explain.
