Will SSDs Take Over The Enterprise?
Read/Write Transfer Performance
Since the Areca controller is optimized for maximum I/O performance, it creates a bottleneck in throughput for all RAID configurations that can take advantage of as many as eight hard drives: the maximum throughput is roughly 600 MB/s. Again, we tried an Adaptec Series 5 RAID controller, which provided an additional 250 MB/s maximum read throughput for the Cheetah 15K.5 drives.
When it comes to sequential throughput, you can still reach the highest performance at acceptable cost when using conventional high-speed hard drives. Flash SSDs introduce much better minimum transfer speeds, but at a seemingly unreasonable premium.
