Networking products provider ZyXEL Communications introduced on Tuesday the PLA4231, a dual function Powerline Adapter and 802.11n Wireless Extender that’s powered by 500 Mbps Powerline and 300 Mbps Wi-Fi technology. It extends a Powerline-based network to provide wireless connectivity to another part of the house or office.
"The new PLA4231 offers consumers enhanced functionality and value as it not only extends ZyXEL's industry-leading line of Powerline appliances but extends any Powerline-based home network," said Steven Joe, executive vice president for channel business for Americas at ZyXEL. "The dual function adapter allows consumers to enjoy HD media streaming over Powerline as well as the mobile convenience the built in 802.11n wireless connectivity provides."
To use this device, you’ll first need something like the PLA4205 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter which connects to a router via an Ethernet cable, and plugs into the electrical outlet in the wall. The adapter sends the signal through the power line of a home or office that is in turn picked up by the PLA4231 plugged into an electrical outlet on the same electrical system.
That said, the new adapter provides local 802.11n (300 Mbps) connectivity to an area that may have suffered connection issues in the past. It also sports two Ethernet ports to that non-wireless devices have a chance to jump on the network without having to be relocated near the router or broadband modem.
"ZyXEL's PLA4231 boasts advanced Quality of Service features to improve the streaming quality of multimedia applications. A setup wizard and a WPS button allow users to set up the device and connect to wireless devices easily and quickly," the company said. "A 128-bit Advanced Encryption Security secures Powerline communication and the latest WPA2 standard offers security for Wi-Fi traffic."
ZyXEL’s new PLA4231 is currently available from all major e-commerce site and partners for $90 USD. For more information about the adapter and related Powerline products, head here.
