Valve, GI Announces Portal 2 for Holiday Season

Game Informer has revealed the cover of its April issue, announcing that Valve is releasing a stand-alone sequel to its hit game, Portal. While the magazine doesn't offer anything concrete in terms of juicy details on its website, GI promises that its 12-page cover story will cough up meaty bits of Portal 2's gameplay mechanics, storyline, and "some surprising new twists."

The first game, Portal, originally hit the gaming scene back in 2007, slipped in as part of Valve's The Orange Box bundle for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Valve also released Portal as a standalone retail PC game in 2008 while also providing the digital version online via its Steam service. Since its release, Portal received numerous awards, including "Game of the Year (PC)" by 1UP, "Innovation of the Year" by the Official Xbox Magazine, and more.

But unlike the first installment, Portal 2 will be shipped as a stand-alone, full-priced retail game, and is expected to arrive during the 2010 holiday season, according to Valve. The news certainly comes as a dramatic conclusion to various teases and updates to the current Portal PC game in recent weeks, including a mysterious change to the game's original ending.

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

Well, it sure makes sense to release a follow-up to something this popular as a stand-alone game.

everyone has already been spoiled by the orange box bundle...to the point that releasing a sequel of an excellent game from that bundle at full retail price seems very high =/

Well considering how interesting and different the first Portal was, I'm looking forward to the next one. A stand alone is nice too, considering most people uninstalled it after the meager 4-5 hours of gameplay were completed.

Now I've got the song stuck in my head, dammit...

    ***This was a triumph.***
***I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.***
***It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.***
