id Software Talks Post-Launch Plans, Open Beta Session For 'Doom'

If you weren’t part of the select group of fans that participated in the latest round of the Doom closed multiplayer beta, you’re in luck. The team at id Software is hosting an open beta session next week. In addition, Bethesda Softworks, the game’s publisher, also discussed post-launch content for the game.

Specifically, the open beta will run from April 15 through April 17. Just like the closed beta sessions, you’ll be able to play the Team Deathmatch and Warpath game modes on the Heatwave and Infernal maps. Additional details weren’t provided, but we should hear more about the open beta next week.

As far as post-launch plans are concerned, id Software will continue to support SnapMap (Doom’s game and level editor) with free assets and features, so players can build the game mode or map of their dreams. With multiplayer being a major focus for the game, the developers will also add more game modes (for free) to keep fans entertained.

If you want even more content, you can purchase additional downloadable content (DLC) for $14.99 each ($39.99 with the season pass). The developers have three paid DLCs planned for the game, which will contain more maps, weapons, hack modules and characters. The first batch of paid content is expected to arrive this summer, after the game's launch on May 13.

In other words: we made the game, chopped it up into 4 pieces and will sell it to you bit by bit. Since no one will pay $105 for the game, we will break it up and make it seem that's not the actual cost for the complete program...DLC is such a scam.

You say that, but Wolfenstein: New Order was the best FPS shooter to come out in many, many years.

Carmack is overrated as hell, resting on the laurels of 20+years back and has done nothing to push the collective gaming experience to new heights. Unreal and Crytek stand as the greatest technical gaming engines, and idTech is a massive PoS. In 2016, there is:

    -No SLI Support
    -Hardcoded 60fps cap
-Texture Streaming (which results in pop in...even for high end HW at common resolutions)

I played the DOOM closed beta and was really disappointed. 60fps made the "Ultra fast paced" shooter feel like mush.

Doom always was primarily a single player game to play and create mods with. Shifting its focus to multiplayer is risky. On top of that the multiplayer looks mediocre. I hope it's better than it looks.

OR they defined the features to finish the game, went into feature-lock a few weeks back, and all the features they couldn't fit into the game before the release date would be pushed back, so it was turned into DLC.

Now, the fact that it is a PAID DLC is controversial. Fallout 4 just released a survival mode as a free update, which could be made a paid one.

Just so people don't come thinking all DLC is a cash-grab scam (some are, though).
