I remember a family member picking up a dual core AMD mini tower with I think a 500gb HD and a monitor for around $350 a year or two ago. And the thing just flys through everything they do with it because I set it up to do regular maintenance and all they do is basic things like web browsing, youtube, music, and movies. For the low end machines I think we can do better than the dell as we already reached a point where most non tech savy people will be happy as long as maintenance is done periodically. And for those who want more power than that I think building from scratch will be a better choice as you get more freedom for parts and can customize it to your needs. That and you don't have to deal with dell's awful customer support if something goes wrong, which I have way to much experience with to the point where I rather shell out hundreds more to never have to deal with again, ever.

I have a Dell laptop. My motherboard failed due to a power issue. I emailed them, got a reply the next day, and an engineer swapped it out a couple days after that for nothing and no questions asked. Our other Dell desktop is approaching 5 years old and has never failed. Over time I've swapped bits out and other work and it handles everything.
