Hammacher Schlemmer Has a No-Glasses 3D Tablet
Here's an interesting gadget for the holidays.
Looking to buy a tablet this holiday season? Hammacher Schlemmer has an interesting solution costing $349.95: a glasses-free 3D tablet. The company claims this is the only tablet on the market that displays 3D movies and images without those pesky glasses.
According to the company, 3D delivery is accomplished by using a parallax barrier layer placed on top of the 8- inch screen. The device delivers a slightly different set of pixels to each eye, thus creating a depth of field when held in specific angles... and without color-distorting lenses.
Based on a brief list of specs, the tablet has an 8-inch touch-based screen with a 1280 x 800 resolution, backed by Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" and a battery promising five to seven hours of use on a two-hour charge. The company claims that playback "automatically distinguishes between 3D and 2D content." The tablet will even convert 2D material for a 3D-like effect.
The 3D tablet also packs 16 GB of internal storage, an SD card slot for up to 32 GB of even more storage, and support for USB flash drives via a presumed microSD 2.0 port. Other features include Bluetooth and likely Wireless N networking, a 2MP camera on the back, a 0.3MP camera on the front, and a wireless keyboard case. The tablet measures 5.5 x 8.5 x 0.75 inches and weighs a mere one pound.
Unfortunately, the product description isn't specific about other hardware details like the processor and amount of RAM. There's also no indication that the tablet is pure Android, or a forked version without Google's services. Still, this could be a neat toy this holiday season for those with a spare $349.95.

magicandy I'm sick of parralax barrier being the only auto-stereoscopic (aka glasses-free) tech being used. There is far better tech available that can use a camera to track your eyes and aim the pixels directly at them. No need to keep your head still like with 3DS and other parralax barrier displays.Reply
Parralax barrier is way too heavy handed of an approach to glasses-free 3D. Keeping your head still and stiff while trying to play a game or watch a movie gets tiring quickly. -

Warsaw @ Knowom, maybe you don't like 3D, but there are plenty of us that do enjoy 3D gaming or certain applications in 3D. I do not want it to go away, only to be constantly improved upon and implemented further in displays & tied to VR.Reply -

colson79 I agree with knowom, I have had enough of the whole 3D thing. It doesn't add anything to movies and games and I find it kind of distracting. I hate the fact that If I want to see a new movie on the large screens in the theater I'm forced to watch it in 3D. The 2D version is always showing on some small screen in the back of the theater.Reply
