The Nook has been available in the United States since November 2009. Since then, it's seen numerous upgrades and the ereader is now available in the form of the Nook Color and Nook Tablet. Ranging from $99 to $179, the Nook is a cheap and cheerful option for those looking at getting an ereader.
Today, book retailer Barnes and Noble, the company behind the Nook, announced plans to bring the Nook to the United Kingdom in October. B&N says the NOOK Simple Touch and NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight will hit UK shops in time for the holiday shopping season. The company will also launch its digital bookstore service with both hardware and digital content available via the www.nook.co.uk online storefront.
This represents B&N's first international expansion. The company also plans to announce partnerships with British retailers in the near future, which means you'll see the Nook for sale in brick and mortar stores as well as online.
Pricing has not yet been announced, nor did Barnes & Noble talk about whether or not it has plans to bring the Nook Color or the Nook Tablet to the UK market anytime soon. For now, interested parties in the United Kingdom will have to make do with the Nook Simple Touch, which boasts a 6-inch 800x600 touchscreen E-ink display, an 800 Mhz TIOMAP 3621, 256 MB of RAM, 2 GB internal storage (microSD brings this up to 32 GB), WiFi, and a battery that will last two months provided WiFi is switched off. The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight (pictured above) adds a front-lighting technology to aide reading in the dark.
